We drive on I5 past Wapato Hills Park all the time, but have you ever explored the top? In this outdoor presentation with local botanist, Dr. Romey Haberle, we’ll walk up the trail to the summit of Wapato Hills. We’ll learn about the unique aspen and Oregon ash communities, about prairie and woodland plants, and other botanical treasures. Expect to find surprises along the way!
Meeting Point: Corner of Wapato St and S 64TH Street entrance (by the playground).
We’ll be walking 2-4 miles on fairly steep trail ground and pavement. The presentation will take up to 2 hours, depending on the group's pace.
Please dress comfortably and according to the weather forecast. Bring sun and rain protection, a water bottle, and anything else you need to stay focused and happy.

Speaker Bio
Dr. Romey Haberle holds a PhD in Botany from UT Austin She taught at PLU from 2009-2025, and has been the curator of the Irene Creso Herbarium and the Quigg Greenhouse at Pacific Lutheran University. Her interests are focused on the cultural uses of plants, invasive species, rare plants, and how plant communities change over time. She volunteers with Parks Tacoma, drawing on her botanical passions, and is a member of the MPT Nature and Environment Advisory Council.
