Until 2024, our planting team consisted of one planting coordinator, with help from summer interns. Now consisting of multiple full-time staff, the team works hard to manage the year-round work of tree plantings, tree shares, tree watering, and trainings.

WHAT WE DO

  • In the spring and fall months, we host multiple tree planting events. All of our events are family friendly, and we welcome all abilities to participate. Learn more about the different planting programs we partner on below.

  • TTF partners with a diverse array of community organizations and neighborhood councils to provide small scale tree shares and resources for local communities. At these events, community members can take home free trees for their property and leave confident to plant after chatting with Tacoma Tree Foundation staff and volunteers about planting and tree care practices. Visit out calendar page to see what tree shares we have upcoming in the spring and fall seasons.

  • During the hot summer months, we water the street trees of Green Blocks: Hilltop recipients. Catch us in our logoed truck filling up tree bags, looking for frogs, and enjoying the sun.

  • Join us at the City of Tacoma plant holding facility to pot small tree plugs, weed, and do other small maintenance jobs. Visit our calendar to learn more and register.

  • Tree Stewards Training workshops are offered to Pierce County residents to learn about tree care and aspects of urban forestry. Tree Stewards help support TTF work by implementing and maintaining neighborhood plantings, informing neighbors about tree care, and caring for trees in their neighborhood.

  • Tree Captains Trainings are for volunteers looking to take their tree planting skills to the next level. Tree Captains help make our events successful by creating welcoming learning environments, guiding small volunteer teams, and connecting with local residents. Visit our calendar to learn about upcoming trainings.

COMMUNITY TREE PROGRAM

The Community Tree Program (CTP) is a partnership between the City’s Urban Forestry program and Tacoma Tree Foundation. CTP fosters community engagement, education, and training to support the long-term growth and stewardship of Tacoma’s urban forest. This program prioritizes underserved and overburdened neighborhoods throughout Tacoma by reducing barriers and expanding services, ensuring everyone has access to the benefits of a thriving urban forest.

BRANCH OUT

Branch Out is designed to address inequity in our community forest by bringing trees and tree care support into the communities that need them most. Branch Out provides residents in priority neighborhoods who request trees with tree matching, delivery, and planting assistance. As part of this program, we host a community tree share with culturally relevant resources and language assistance services. Branch Out is a Community Tree Program rooted in partnership and community, with funding from the City of Tacoma’s Urban Forestry Program.

GREEN BLOCKS

Green Blocks is Tacoma Tree Foundation’s neighborhood-specific program that provides community outreach, engagement, and TREES! Our goal is to empower residents by reducing barriers, providing tree care education, and assisting in tree selection, delivery, and planting. TTF brings trees to the areas where they have the most social and environmental impact. The focus of these efforts is centered in neighborhoods where the need for trees, greening, community health, and human well-being are the greatest.

SafeTREE ROUTES TO SCHOOL

The City of Tacoma is partnering with Tacoma Tree Foundation to pilot a grant-funded tree planting project, SafeTREE Routes to School, focused on improving walking routes to schools in select neighborhoods!
