Temperature Jamboree!

Come gather temperature data and celebrate our tree plantings in the Tacoma Mall Neighborhood. This will be a fun community science event, picnic in the park, and tree walk!

Agenda: You can come for one or all of the sessions.

  • 10:30am: Gather and share refreshments

  • 11am-12pm: Collect temperatures in small groups around the neighborhood

  • 12pm-1pm: Lunch Provided

  • 1pm-2pm: Tree walk in the Tacoma Mall Neighborhood with our founder and arborist, Sarah Low.

  • 2pm-3pm: Second round of collecting temperatures in small groups around the neighborhood

  • 3pm+ Optional happy hour for participants

Description:

Join us for a day of fun and learning in the Tacoma mall neighborhood! TTF and TNC are working with University of Washington researchers, and the City of Tacoma to learn about the urban heat island effect and its relationship to tree canopy coverage. You're invited to help with this project by collecting temperature data at various spots across the neighborhood. There will be a central meeting hub, food, and a neighborhood walking tour. Sign up below to let us know when you would like to participate, sign up for one or more “data collection” session below. Each data collection session will begin with an introduction to the project and brief data collection training. Don't miss this chance to learn more about the G.R.I.T. project!  

Logistics:

Please come prepared to walk around the streets of Tacoma! Bring your cell phone for navigation. Wear sturdy walking shoes and bring sun protection, hat, and a water bottle. Snacks and extra water provided!
