Mindfulness Tree Walk and Haiku Comics Workshop

Trees and art root us in place and in the season. As we conclude one more seasonal cycle, we invite you to join David Lasky, Sarah Low, and Northwest Sinfonietta to wander through Wright Park and find inspiration for creating your own visual poem. During our time together, we will walk among the trees and consider the many creatures and elements that they are in relation with: air, birds, fungi, minerals, soil, and rain. Then, we will gather at the Wright Park classroom to write and draw together with David Lasky’s guidance.

We are so excited to be partnering with Northwest Sinfonietta once again! The focus of this workshop is inspired by their March 14 and 15 concert, Sky and Stone.

Please register at tacomatreefoundation.org/calendar

You can bring your own art supplies but we will be providing paper, and writing and drawing tools.

Sarah Low founded TTF in 2018 and Strategic Nature in 2021. She is the reason why our work begins with community! Sarah holds degrees in Fish and Wildlife Conservation, Watershed Management, she is a certified arborist, and an expert in urban forestry, community forestry, and health and wellness. Her work combines a love of trees and nature with her professional background in urban and community forestry. Sarah has been studying trees since she noticed ants on a favorite flowering dogwood when she was 10. Her curiosity for trees and nature led her to pursue a career focused on urban ecosystem health and sustainability. All along the way, Sarah found relief, healing, connection, and joy outdoors. In addition to leading educational talks, mindfulness walks, and helping to connect people to nature and to each other, Sarah is currently Assistant Professor of Practice in Urban Forestry at the Oregon State University College of Forestry.

David Lasky is a graphic novelist and illustrator based in Seattle, WA. He also teaches comics classes, and has been known to make poetry comics as well. He is the co-author of the Eisner-Award-winning graphic novel, “Carter Family: Don’t Forget This Song.” But he is better known to children as the guy who colored Cece Bell’s awesome graphic novel, “El Deafo,” a Newbery Honor Book. He teaches comics at numerous venues in the Seattle area, including Richard Hugo House and Coyote Central.
