Fungi Connections: Mycology 101 with Lisa Kenny

The world of fungi is one of mystery, waiting to be unlocked. They can be a means for transformation and support community resilience! Join Lisa Kenny and get a glimpse into the world of mycology through a hands-on workshop. Arrive curious and prepare to learn the basics of mycology, how mycology can support community resilience, some benefits and uses of fungi, and get hands-on experience practicing the inoculation process by building kits to grow edible mushrooms at home. 

Free grow-kits will be offered at the end of the workshop which will include a spray bottle, your own fully inoculated bucket set-up, and ready to fruit pearl oyster mushrooms!

What you’ll learn:

  • How mycology can support community resilience

  • What fungi/mycelium are with an overview of the Fungi kingdom 

  • Benefits and uses of fungi

  • Inoculation process

At least 20 kits will be available. This workshop is capped at 30. 

About Lisa 

Driven by a growing understanding of mycology and the need for community resilience, in 2020 Lisa became a freelance Mycology Specialist for two BIPOC led organizations in Seattle, Young Women Empowered and YES! Farm. Lisa’s mycology freelance work focuses on creating an ecologically holistic and innovative approach to amend soils through mycoremediation and using mycology as a teaching tool to advance food sovereignty. Lisa believes mycology offers many lessons on reciprocity, resilience, wonder, and more! Professionally, Lisa is a certified ISA arborist with over 8 years experience in environmental restoration and urban forestry. Recreationally, she has received mushroom cultivation and mycoremediation training with Fungi for the People and has used her skillset to teach others to grow oyster, shiitake, and hen of the woods mushrooms.
